Founder Janelle Robinson, a firefighter in North Carolina, first started experimenting with retired fire hose from her local fire department. When new equipment arrived, older fire hose was ready to be replaced — but Janelle saw potential where others saw scrap.
Instead of sending the hose to a landfill, she brought sections home and began cutting and sewing the material at her sewing machine.
What started as an experiment soon turned into something entirely new: durable, American-made bags crafted from retired fire hose.
From Firefighting Equipment to Durable Everyday Bags
Working with fire hose presents unique challenges. Unlike traditional fabric, fire hose is designed to withstand extreme pressure, heat, and abrasion. That durability makes it incredibly strong — but also difficult to sew and shape.
Early prototypes were made entirely from fire hose, but the material proved difficult to turn and manipulate. After multiple design revisions, Janelle refined the concept.
Today Burn Bags combine authentic fire hose panels with durable waxed canvas, creating a structure that maintains the character of the hose while allowing the bags to remain flexible and comfortable for everyday use.

Leather handles are cut from water buffalo hides, selected for their strength and flexibility. Each strap is cut by hand and attached using solid copper rivets, a fastening method known for its long-term reliability.
Copper rivets are commonly used in heavy-duty gear because they will not loosen or fail under normal use. Combined with waxed canvas and reinforced stitching, the result is a bag built for years of daily use.

The organization supports women rebuilding their lives after addiction, incarceration, or abusive relationships by helping them develop skills and regain stability.
Some of the women in the program now help sew and assemble Burn Bags in a small workshop environment where they can earn income, build confidence, and develop new opportunities.
For Janelle, this part of the business has become just as meaningful as the products themselves.

Customers are encouraged to fill the pouch with snacks, toiletries, or a note of appreciation and deliver it to their local fire station.
